1

Student groups will conduct research on the history of a sport.

1. Students will learn about the relationships between lines using the various playing fields for sports.

2. Students will describe the attributes of polygons using the playing fields for examples.

Grade 2-3 (Lesson Provided)

Use formal and informal language to describe the attributes of two-dimensional figures.

Grade 4-6 (Lesson Provided)

Students use formal geometric language to describe geometric figures.

Students will investigate the physical properties of the different playing balls.  They will investigate density, buoyancy, and mass.

Students will play basketball.

2

Student groups will create presentations covering their research on the history of a sport.

Students will investigate the concepts of congruence and symmetry using the playing fields.

Grade 3

Students will recognize congruence and symmetry.

Grade 5 (Lesson Provided)

Students will recognize congruence and symmetry.

The students will conduct investigations about the “bounciness” of the different balls and make conclusions about which properties make that ball best for the sport as well as what would happen to the game if the balls were switched or had different properties.

Students will play soccer.

3

Students will select a famous athlete to research.

Students will investigate angles.

Grades 1-2(Lesson Provided)

Students will begin learning about angles.

Grades 3-5(Lessons Provided)

Students will classify angles.

Grade 6  (Lesson Provided)

Students will measure angles.

Students will investigate the properties of friction.  They will determine the effects of friction on the different playing fields as well as on the balls.

Students will play baseball or kickball.

4

Students will write a biography and create a visual presentation about the athlete of their choice.

Students will measure perimeter.

Grade 3 (Lesson provided)

Students use standard units to find the perimeter of a shape.

Grade 4

Students use measurement tools to determine perimeter.

Grade 5

Students will connect models for perimeter with its respective formulas.

Grade 6 (Lesson Provided)

Students will select and use appropriate units, tools, and formulas to solve problems involving perimeter.

Students will investigate the effect s of force using the different sports balls.  They will also investigate how density and mass affect the amount of force needed to move an object the same distance.

Students will play volleyball.

5

Student groups will create a sport.  Each group must create the rules and playing fields for their sports.  Each group must also teach the class how to play their sport.

Students will determine the area of the shapes on the playing fields of various sports.

Grade 2 (Lesson Provided)

Students use non-standards units to measure area of a two-dimensional surface.

Grade 3 (Lesson Provided)

Use concrete and pictorial models of square units to determine the area of two-dimensional surfaces.

Grade 4

Students will estimate and use measurement tools to determine area.

Grade 5

Students will connect models for area with its formula and select and use appropriate units to measure area.

Grade 6

Student will select and use appropriate units, tool, or formulas to measure area.

Students will plan and conduct a scientific investigation exploring one of the principles of force and motion.

Student groups will teach how to play their created sports.
