Pre-K Lessons
Pre-Kindergarten: The following lessons are an introduction to basic polygons; squares, rectangles, and triangles. Shapes are everywhere. Looking for shapes in our environment helps students see that objects are all around us in different forms. These lessons create an awareness of the existence of objects in our environment that can be used to introduce geometric shapes to our young learners.

Kinder Lessons
Kinder: The following lessons are an introduction to basic polygons; square, rectangle, triangle, trapezoid, and rhombus. Shapes are everywhere. Looking for shapes in the environment helps students see that objects have different properties. These properties can be used to identify, describe, sort, and classify objects. These lessons lay the foundation for students to begin working with geometric shapes. Comparing and Contrasting shapes based on attributes will ultimately support children in their understanding of inequalities.

1st Grade Lesson
Grade 1: "Where Has Polygon?" takes first graders from the point of open sorts to the discussion and labeling of critical attributes of common polygons including, but not limited to squares, rectangles, parallelograms and triangles. By the end of this week, students will be able to sort, label and identify each of these shapes with at least 85% accuracy and will create posters in small groups detailing the ways in which polygons are depicted in magazines, newspapers, and other print materials.

2nd Grade Lesson
Grade 2: "Where Has Polygon?" extends the learning done in 1st grade to the creation of new polygons through the closing of open figures and the splitting of existing polygons. Students continue to sort, categorize and label but further extend their study to include the role of prefixes in labeling polygons and the importance of non-polygons and how they differ from polygons. The culminating activity for second grade is a walking fieldtrip around the campus, armed with digital cameras, to capture polygons as they appear in their world.

3rd Grade Lessons
Grade 3: "Congruency" This lesson plan allows students to work together to identify and construct congruent figures.

Grade 3: "Lines of Symmetry" In this lesson, students explore the symmetry of shapes having multiple lines of symmetry, working together to create a definition of the concept.

4th Grade Lessons
Grade 4: "Angle Lesson" Students will understand that angles are identified by their measurements. They will explore the attributes of right, acute, and obtuse angles using tangible and virtual geoboards.
4th Angle Lesson.docx
Grade 4: "Lines and Angles" Students will use their knowledge of lines and angles to observe and record examples of real world examples of geometry in their school environment. They will organize their data and share their findings. This lesson would be enriched with the student use of digital cameras and availability of technology.

5th Grade Lessons
Grade 5: "Transformation of Polygons" explores how polygons are seen in architectural design, especially with the use of transformations. Students will get involved in figuring out how certain designs are formated by transforming polygons and create or re-create designs on their own using transformations of various polygons.
5th Transformation of Polygons.doc
Grade 5: "Polygon Transformations into Polyhedron" looks into architecture to notice the patterns of congruent polygons and the various transformations that occur to create polyhedrons and design.
