Unit Name: Team Geometry: Angles
|
Unit Length: 2 class periods
|
Overview: The students will determine how angles are used in popular games and how they affect the play and outcome of many of their favorite sports.
|
DESIRED RESULTS

TEKS and SEs
TSWBAT recognize and name the types of angles that are used in sports and will discuss the importance of angles in sports and games.

Enduring Understandings (Big Ideas)
Angles are important parts of playing fields or games you play (like billiards). Shapes like rectangles, which are formed by right angles, mark off specific areas on playing fields. Games like billiards depend upon angles-without understanding angles, you would have a difficult time shooting the balls into the pockets or suffer penalties during a game.
|
Essential Questions
What types of angles are evident on the different sports fields or game tables?
Is more than one type of angle evident on the playing area?
Is one type of angle seen more frequently on playing area?
What kinds of angles do players use when they play sports?
|
Learning Goals and Objectives
TSW identify angles and their importance in sports (like football/soccer, tennis, and cricket) and games (like snooker/billiards).

|
ASSESSMENT PLAN
|
Performance Tasks
Create a video that shows how angles can be used in a sport or a game or their importance in a sport or a game like billiards.
|
Other Evidence
TSW recognize how angles play a part in several aspects of games. Angles are important not only in the playing fields or areas of certain games, but also in the body movement of players in certain games (like basketball.)
|
LEARNING PLAN
|
Engage: TSW use the site http://www.hittingthetarget.com/
to view and measure angles involved in billiards. TSW use a protractor to measure several angles on the snooker/billiards table.
Explore: TSW begin to look at specific angles as they relate to other games on the http://www.hittingthetarget.com/ website. TSW must answer questions based on their knowledge of different types of angle (acute, right, and obtuse angles.) As students become more proficient at measuring and recognizing angles, TTW begin to show other examples of how angles affect the play of a game. A basketball players’ body before shooting is angled in such a way that they increase the probability they will make the shot. Tennis player’s bodies and rackets, angled in specific ways, allow the player to direct the ball to a specific area on the court making their opponent miss the return shot or unable to get to the ball before it bounces. http://www.revolutionarytennis.com/step1.html http://www.5min.com/Video/How-To-Play-Basketball-Three-Point-Shooting-Angle-6184318
Explain:
TTW review angles in various games and will show the video http://www.5min.com/Video/How-To-Play-Basketball-Three-Point-Shooting-Angle-6184318 and ask students to make note of the specific angles in the players body that will allow the player to make the shot. TTW show

Extension:
As an extension activity, TSW watch a recorded basketball game and freeze the frame before a player takes a shot at the basket. TSW look at the angles a player’s body creates when they are taking their shot and predict whether the shot will be made
