Unit Name: Team Geometry

Unit Length: 6 weeks

Overview: Find the perimeter of a playing court using polygons, triangles and quadrilateral shapes.

DESIRED RESULTS

TEKS and SEs

TEKS 3.8Identify classify and describe two and three dimensional geometric figures by their attributes. Compare two dimensional figures or both by their attributes using formal geometry vocabulary.

Critical Vocabulary

Polygon, side, vertex, triangle, quadrilateral, square, rectangle, parallelogram, perimeter, length, width

Enduring Understandings (Big Ideas)

In this lesson, you will learn to recognize a polygon and describe it by its number of sides.

Essential Questions

What is the same in all the polygons?

How can you sort the shapes?

Are all the sides equal length?

Learning Goals and Objectives

Find the perimeter of polygon shapes.

Sort and classify polygons based on perimeter size and shape.

Materials Needed

Area Perimeter black line master, scissors, sticky notes, ruler

ASSESSMENT PLAN

Performance Tasks

-Students measure each shape and add the sides together to get the perimeter of the whole court and half the court.

-Students measure and record the perimeter for all the shapes, then classify them as triangle or quadrilaterals from least to greatest.

-Students measure perimeter for polygon shapes with interactive website for direct feedback

Other Evidence

-Sts work together on the performance tasks

-Sts complete the perimeter classification independently.

LEARNING PLAN

Engage:

-Sts compare & contrast different sport playing courts by looking for shapes within a shape with a partner.

Explore:

-Sts find the perimeter of the large rectangle before cutting, and find the perimeter of half the court with a partner.

Explain:

-Write statements to describe what you discovered with a partner using different colored markers on paper.

Elaborate:

-Sts sort by shape of polygons; triangles- 3sides, quadrilaterals-4 sides

-Sts measure the sides each of each shape using centimeters and add the sides to get the perimeter of the shape with a partner.

Evaluate:

-Sts order pieces from least to greatest perimeter using centimeters, independently.

-Compare results as a class.

Extension:

All pieces on the sheet fit perfectly into a rectangle. Could all pieces be arranged into a triangle, square, or parallelogram?

Modifications:

Provide only half the sheet of shapes to the students, reduce the amount of pieces.
