Week 1:

Science:

Conservation - HerreralessonConservation#1.doc

In this lesson, students will analyze what happens to our natural resources if we do not conserve.

Math:

lines and line segments - Cray1-5E lessongeometry.pdf

In this lesson, students will study lines and line segments by identifying these lines with the letters of their names.

Design a floor plan - Mathews 5E Mackay Floor Plan.doc

In this lesson, students will create pattern block floor plans and then identify angles, as well as parallel and perpendicular lines within. This lesson can be introduced at the beginning of the unit and completed at the end of the unit.

Social Studies:

Architecture in different regions -

In this lesson, student will study different regions of the world and how architecture is similar and different.  They will specifically look at how climate in regions has influenced the architecture of that region.

Art:

Patterns in design - symmetry and translations - Mathews 5E Mackay Patterns in Art & Design.doc

In this lesson, students will study translations, reflections, and rotations with quilt blocks and tessellations.

Week 2:

Science:

Conservation - HerreralessonConservation#2.doc

In this lesson, students will identify products architects use to build a home that are recycled/reusable materials.

Math:

2-D shapes - TurnerPolygonLesson#2.doc

In this lesson, students will identify, analyze, and compare 2-D shapes based on their attributes.  They will create shape riddles and identify 2-D shapes on a digital image of an architectural structure.

2-D shapes-Geometry in our everyday lives-1.1.doc

In this lesson, students will explore the world around them looking for polygons.  They will use a digital camera to capture these images and create a geometry book.

Social Studies:

Architecture Through History -

In this lesson, students will explore how architecture has changed over the course of history.

Art:

Geometry in the art of M.C. Escher and Frank Lloyd Wright -

In this lesson, students will be able to see and explore the geometry explored by these artists.

Week 3:

Science:

Guest speaker -

An architect will come into the classroom and students will be able to learn about the profession.

Math:

angles - Cray2-5E lessongeometry.pdf

In this lesson, students will study right angles, acute angles, and obtuse angles by using pipe cleaners to create models.

hansen5Elesson2.doc

In this lesson, students will be able to calculate the area/perimeter of rectangular shapes.

hansen5Elesson1.doc

In this lesson, students will calculate the area/perimeter of triangles and random polygon shapes.  Students will compare the two.

Social Studies:

Architecture and Natural Elements -

In this lesson, students will be able to explore how people have used natural elements from their environment in architecture.

Art:

Point of View - 2D

In this lesson, students will see and draw 2D shapes.

Week 4:

Science:

Green Home Tours.doc

In this lesson, students will explore homes made from different types of of recyclable materials.

Math:

scale- TurnerScaleLesson#1.doc

In this lesson, students will create a floor plan of their classroom using an appropriate scale.

Social Studies:

Historic American Buildings Architecture -

In this lesson, students will explore the architecture of historical buildings in America.

Art:

Point of view 3-D -

In this lesson, students will be able to show how geometry is used in their everyday lives.
